CANBERRA COLLEGE

Canberra, ACT Year 7-12 Official Website

ABOUT THE SCHOOL

Canberra College is located in the centre of Canberra, close to many cultural institutions and sporting venues such as the two universities, Parliament, the National Gallery and the Centre for Science and Technology. Students come from over 50 different countries. This diversity reflects Canberra’s role as the capital of Australia. Canberra College offers a wide range of academic courses with a focus on IT and the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects. The Faculty of Arts is outstanding, with a diverse and challenging range of performing and visual arts. Students learn in the state-of-the-art facilities of the Canberra College Performing Arts Centre, where exciting performances and exhibitions are also presented to the public. Participants in the drama classes tour annually with their own productions, including performances at the Adelaide Fringe Festival. The college’s jazz band is critically acclaimed and invited to perform at many regional and national events. The band performs at the Merimbula and Moruya Jazz Festivals each year. The photography and visual arts exhibitions are also consistently well received. The documentary films and media projects are surprising for their professional quality. The Outdoor Education section is also exceptionally good. There are two different programmes here. One is the called the “Shoalhaven Journey”, which is based on the local river system of Shoalhaven. It includes various adventure activities such as camping, survival training at the source of the river system, camping in remote areas, canoeing/kayaking and rafting through the rugged wilderness of Morton National Park, and exploring the depths of the various cave and canyon systems. On the other hand, there is a diving and snorkelling program in the pristine waters between Shellharbour and Jervis Bay. In this programme, Canberra College offers a range of Professional Association of Diving Instructor (PADI) offerings, from Open Water certification to Advanced Open Water Rescue Diver.
